Organizations working to conserve biodiversity

Wild Bird Trust

Maplewood Flats is one of my favourite places to go birdwatching on the North Shore of Vancouver and it is a critical refuge for waterfowl and other birds. Wild Bird Trust is a non-profit society that cares for the Maplewood Flats Conservation Area in North Vancouver. They support the birds (and other wildlife) that occupy this area by providing ecological protection and improving the landscape through ecological restoration.

Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society

I had the privilege of volunteering at MARS in 2018, during which time I bandaged animal injuries, hand-fed bald eagles, cleaned a lot of soiled bedding, and had once-in-a-lifetime proximity to many incredible species. MARS is a non-profit organization and wildlife rescue centre located in Merville, Vancouver Island. Although the term "avian" is in their name, MARS also cares for various mammals, including deer, river otters, and racoons. In addition to monetary donations, MARS sometimes requests donations of paper towel, soap, and other necessities when they have a lot of patients to care for. Find them on Facebook to keep up with their needs.

Habitat Acquisition Trust

While I have not had the pleasure of being personally involved with Habitat Acquisition Trust, I strongly support their goals of educating the public about the natural world and protecting what natural habitat remains. HAT is a regional land trust that conserves nature on south Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. They currently protect over 5,000 acres of habitat and run multiple outreach programs designed to engage people with nature.

Additional Organizations

In November 2021, I joined the Canadian Conservation collective. Twice a year, the photographers in this group auction off a print(s) for charity and 100% of the proceeds are donated to a different conservation organization. So far, I have auctioned off artwork for the following non-profits:

Grizzly Bear Foundation

The Grizzly Bear Foundation draws upon science and Indigenous knowledge to support grizzly bear conservation across North America through research, public education, and advocacy.

Coyote Watch Canada

Coyote Watch Canada advocates for positive human-wildlife interactions across Canada through education, research, and non-lethal conflict resolution.

Wildlife Preservation Canada

Wildlife Preservation Canada saves critically endangered species by conducting science-based breeding and release, reintroduction, and translocation programs across Canada.
